City of Ringgold stands strong against pressure
In recent weeks, news outlets have carried the story of a battle between the city of Ringgold, Georgia and “Southern rights” groups. I use quotes because these groups seem to be concerned about the rights of only some Southerners -- namely those who are white and cling to the notion that “the South’s gonna do it again.” Their concern for the rights of black Southerners is particularly underwhelming.
The American Civil War is unique in that the federal government sought to restore rather than destroy the rebels. The winners chose to honor the losers. It’s true that plenty of exploitation went on following the Civil War, including political corruption and “carpetbaggers” who came down from the North to prey on the disaffected southerners and snap up failing estates. Still, the Union pursued an overarching theme of reconciliation. Men who raised arms against their country were granted a presidential pardon. Even the generals, who resigned their position with the Union army in order to fight against it, were pardoned in full.
The United States immortalizes soldiers who fought on both sides of the conflict, erecting monuments in honor of both Confederate and Union victories. As such, the Confederacy has been venerated rather than condemned in American history.
It’s no surprise that many Georgians still cling to the image of a noble Confederacy. Georgia is the home of die-hards. We value independence. We mistrust Big Government. We are proud and we are stubborn – and we consider it an honor when someone tells us so.
We are also a family-oriented people, bound to revere the blood that once spilled on the grass, yet still flows through our own veins. It is natural that we want to honor and defend our Confederate ancestors – who probably never even owned slaves, and fought valiantly for what they believed was right.
As Lincoln famously stated when dedicating the battlefield at Gettysburg, “It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.” And we do. Thousands of acres of fields and monuments, numerous museums, battalions of re-enactors, along with dozens of country tunes, ghost stories, and an entire genre of literature ensure that we will never forget.
But is it altogether fitting and proper to continue flying the Confederate flag – and indeed, not just any Confederate flag but the actual battle flag – over public buildings in Georgia today? Can white Georgians claim the right to keep waving that emblem in the face of other Georgians who experienced attacks and demonstrations, feared lynching, and faced every kind of discrimination?
Perhaps we can, legally –but that does not mean we should? I applaud the City of Ringgold for taking a stand back in 2005 when the city council voted 3-2 to remove the flag. I applaud the city again today for standing firm against pressure and even lawsuits from radical extremists.
As for historical accuracy, the city has done its homework and determined that the blue and white flag of General Patrick Cleburne was the flag flown at the depot during the Civil War. At the Battle of Ringgold Gap, no flag was flying; it was an ambush.
If historical authenticity is the goal, the city already has the right flag flying. But what if the goal is something else? Consider the battle over Georgia’s state flag, for example.
Those who pine for “the real Georgia flag” are not aiming for historical accuracy. The flag of 1956 had never before been a Georgia state flag. In fact, no previous Georgia flag featured the Confederate battle cross. The flag of 1956 was introduced as an act of resistance against Civil Rights progress – especially Brown v. Board of Education, which declared segregated education unlawful. Adding the Confederate battle cross to the Georgia state flag was clearly a slap in the face of black Georgians, and many still feel its sting.
Ironically, the United Daughters of the Confederacy spoke against the adoption of the 1956 flag, warning that it would cause strife. They upheld the then-current Georgia flag as a more pure commemoration of the Confederacy. In fact, the pre-1956 flag was almost a replica of the “stars and bars” flown as the first national flag of the Confederacy. The Perdue flag that we fly today is also based closely on that Confederate flag.
If Georgians ever want a historically accurate flag that does not stir up racial tensions, one is available. The original Georgia flag depicted the state seal on a field of deep blue – no stars, no bars, and no battle emblems.
Does the Confederate battle flag represent heritage or hatred? The answer is yes. It represents a heritage that included hatred. Humans were bought and sold like livestock – and our culture declared that such practices were condoned or even mandated by God. Hatred also reigned during the 50’s (and before and after) when crosses were burned and bombs were detonated in Catoosa County. Hatred still clings to the Southern culture today. Hatred is not always passionate and fiery. It may manifest in simple disregard. Hatred may say, “This is my right, and I don’t care who it hurts.”
For some people, waving that rebel flag is way to curse the present times when they must compete alongside people of color in the job market. Their romanticism of the Old South knows no bounds. It’s as if these people watched “Gone with the Wind” and believed that life was really like that. They imagine debutante parties on big plantations, black slaves who loved their bonds and were considered part of the master’s family – well, the cotton-picking part of the family anyway.
Perhaps these would-be Confederates imagine that if the North had not intervened, they would be standing on a balcony with a woman in a big hoop skirt while a black person stood by silently fanning them, like a human appliance. Of course, this reality existed only for a few. The truth is that there were as many poor white people in Georgia as there were black slaves.
If these “Sons of Confederates” want to get back the Good Ole Days, they ought to climb into their overalls and start picking cotton. That’s what most of our Southern ancestors did. They worked the land, they scraped by, and they were lucky if they had a pair of shoes on their feet. In many ways, their life was not much different than the black slaves who worked the fields of the rich. But at least they were free.
The rest of us are happy to honor dead Americans on both sides of the Mason-Dixon Line – once in a while and with historical perspective. We can appreciate the ideals behind the struggle and the bravery of those involved without condoning the more sinister agendas that propelled both sides into battle. We know the history, and we have no desire to turn back the clock.
For those who insist on flying the Confederate flag – just fly it on your own property. Fly the Bonnie Blue secession flag bearing a single star. Fly the battle flag with Saint Andrew’s cross. Fly the 1956 segregation flag. Fly a swastika if you prefer. But do not pretend that your actions don’t hurt or anger some of your neighbors, and embarrass the rest of us.

You should try researching history instead of swallowing and regurgitating the propaganda spewed by the alleged intelligencia of this country.
There was hatred alright, hatred by a central government to self determination. Hatred that continues to this day against freedom loving people.
Was slavery wrong? Damned right it was, but slavery was not the cause of the war. Lincoln's invasion of a sovereign nation started the war. Until 1862 not one Soldier of the Confederacy crossed into union territory. Not one. It was a war of preservation of liberty in the cotton states and a war of aggression by the union to prevent those states from self determination.
Slavery would have died a natural death anyway. 600,000 men didn't die to end it.
Ever asked yourself why the Emancipation Proclamation didn't free ONE single Slave in the United States? Maybe you should
It's funny how the previous (incorrect) argument seems to come up. What is it with people wanting to delude themselves in to believing that slavery was not one of the Civil War issues?
Flag of Segregation? Not at all...
On July 1st, 1956, Georgia Senate Bill 98 took effect. SB98 was signed into law on February 13th, 1956 by then-Governor Marvin Griffin, and it called for a new design to the Georgia State Flag.
What is now commonly referred to as the "56 Flag" was created by a suggestion from Atlanta attorney John Sammons Bell, then-chairman of the State Democratic Party, attorney for the Association of County Commissioners of Georgia (ACCG), and later Judge on Georgia Court of Appeals. His desire was to "forever perpetuate the memory of the Confederate soldier who fought and died for his state."
The flag it replaced was designed by Waynesboro State Senator and former Confederate Colonel Herman H.Perry in 1879, based on the 1st Flag of the Confederacy, AKA Stars and Bars. Similar to our current flag, it had 2 red stripes and 1 white stripe, and a field of blue down the left side.
By 1955 however, people like Representative Denmark Groover argued at the time that the old flag never had enough meaning for him when he was a boy and that the new flag “would replace those meaningless stripes with something that has deep meaning in the hearts of all true Southerners"
Others like Senator Jefferson Davis of Cartersville also argued that the state should be entitled to adopt the new flag, because “Georgia suffered more than any other state in the Civil War and endured a scorched earth policy from the mountains of Tennessee to the sea.” SB98 was discussed and passed with little fanfare, and became law on July 1st, 1956.
It is a fact that under the 1879 Perry version flag, Jim Crow, lynching, segregation, and blatant discrimination were widely practiced and flourished in Georgia, as well as across America, but it is also fact that Georgia's greatest gains in Civil Rights came under the "56 Flag".
Under the 1956 Bell version flag, Georgia's schools were fully integrated, Black citizens were no longer lynched, they began enjoying full civil and equal rights in business, political, and social settings. Georgia gained 3 professional sports teams - Falcons, Braves, and Flames - hosted 2 Superbowls, held the 1996 Olympics, and set the pace for the New South.
Georgia based troops took the "56 Flag" with them onto the foreign battlefields of Viet Nam, Grenada, Beirut, Bosnia, and Desert Storm, and just as their Confederate ancestors before them, fought and died for their homes, families, and flag. Millions of Georgia citizens aged 5 to 50 were born under that flag.
In 1958, the United States Congress passed laws granting the same rights and recognition enjoyed by Union Veterans to men who served in the Confederate States Army and Navy. To this day Confederate Veterans are United States Veterans.
Unfortunantly, the 1956 Bell version flag had it's enemies. Attempts at claiming the "56 flag" was changed to fight integration a long 2 years after the Brown vs Board decision helped begin the BIG LIE that remains to this day. Although the historical facts are out there that plainly refutes this, truth means little for those with agendas.
Concerning those who claim that the flag was "… designed as a last desperate grasp of defiance against integration." Judge John Sammons Bell said "Absolutely nothing could be further from the truth … every bit of it is untrue." He further stated that "Anybody who says anything to the contrary is wrong or perpetuating a willful lie." Plus in the year 1956 several newspaper accounts of the proposed change in the GEORGIA FLAG were published. In none of the articles was there any hint that the flag change was for any reason other than that stated by the gentlemen who proposed the change.
Former Governor Ernest Vandiver said "I can assure you that there was no discussion of segregation or of the U.S. Supreme Court. All that was discussed was the coming centennial of the Civil War and this flag was meant to be a memorial to the bravery, fortitude and courage of the men who fought and died on the battlefield for the Confederacy. More Americans died in that war than any other war in the history of America, before or since."
In April 1992, the Atlanta Journal Constitution conducted a poll of 43,000 people, and their results were that 75% of citizens wished the "56 Flag" remain as is.
Then on July 5th, 1992, the Atlanta Journal Constitution released the results of their own investigation into the flag change of 1956:"There is little written record of the 1956 Legislature and no audio record. News stories about the change were few. In none of our research did we find any record of a stated connection between changing the flag and opposition to desegregation rulings."
On Thursday, September 26th, 1996, during the annual Carter Town Hall Meeting at Emory University, Former United States President, Georgia Governor, and Nobel Prize winner Jimmy Carter stated, "'We should take the attitude that this (1956) flag is not racist in nature and the fact that the flag does play a major role in Southern history is a legitimate historic recognition."
But the lies grew and multiplied. Another bit of untruth was that somehow the flag was "Bad for Business", and although the previously mentioned sports franchises and events came here under the "56 Flag", businesses like Home Depot were created here, Coca-Cola thrived and truly went global. Hartsfield Airport became the biggest in the world and 3 Interstates were built. Foreign companies built numerous plants here, and the economy was booming. The "56 Flag" was seen in movies like Smokey and the Bandit, and on TV shows like Matlock. Regardless, truth was ignored and facts tossed out the window.
In 1994, James Andrew Coleman filed a Federal Lawsuit against then Governor Zell Miller over the 56 Flag. Mr Coleman lost the suit and the flag remained, but once again Denmark Groover stood up to the plate, and in his deposition under oath he stated
" I have no personal knowledge which would dispute the purely historical motives which were expressed then and since by the sponsors and others involved with the legislation when it was introduced in the Senate. While I cannot say that the Supreme Court's rulings regarding desegregation played absolutely no role in my decision to support the bill in the House, I can say that segregationist sentiment was not the overriding or even a significant factor in my vote concerning the new flag, or, based on personal observation and knowledge, in its ultimate adoption by the House....”
It all finally came to a head in January 2001, when Ex-Governor Roy Barnes Blitzkrieged the legislature with threats, lies, and intimidation. Having ran on a campaign not to touch the flag, and just finished an interview on CNN in October 2000, stating the flag was not an issue, his flag change happened so fast not even most legislators knew what was happening. Those who voted with him received extra money for their campaigns and districts, those who refused were stripped of funding, or even in the case of Bowdon's Jack West, had his district removed thru redistricting for voting against the change.
Barnes told Georgians people will forget in 3 months, but Georgians are not as stupid as politicians think they are and voted him and his Democratic party out of power for the first time in 132 years. Roy Barnes was also dropped as a Vice Presidential Candidate option from the 2004 National Democratic Ticket. Under the Barnes Rag, our school children were dropped from 49th to 50th in education rankings, and the economy tanked. Barnes even lied about securing the infamous Mercedes Benz plant.
In what must surely be the most idiotic action by politically correct anti-Southern forces in the history of the known universe, the Roy "King Rat" Barnes 'Ugliest Flag in the World' (voted 72nd out of 72 by N.A.V.A.) was chosen by only 212,020 people out of nearly 4,000,000 registered voters.
Republican Governor Candidate Sonny Perdue promised to allow a vote on which flag would represent Georgia, between the "56 Flag" and the Barnes Rag. Candidate Perdue looked voters in the eye, and with a handshake PROMISED a vote to include the '56 Flag. He sent out letters to thousands and thousands of voters asking their support in exchange for getting a flag vote. The '56 Flag Supporters, also known as the Flaggers, swore to help him. Anti-Barnes signs "BOOT BARNES" and 'LET US VOTE' signs began popping up in almost every yard. Hundreds of thousands of dollars were donated, millions of grassroots man-hours were spent passing out literature, putting up Sonny signs, Flagging the politicians who voted to remove the 56 Flag so hard Barnes refused to make any public appearances, pro-flag/pro Sonny radio and newspaper ads, countless voters signed up in registration drives, and huge numbers of 'Yellow Dog' Democrats switched over for that promised chance to vote between the 2 flags.
On election night, 2002, as the results trickled in and it became clear that Barnes lost, Perdue took the podium to make a victory speech. With Flaggers in the audience, Sonny stated the 'Flag supporters were not' with him, the 'Flag is not an issue for the Perdue Administration' and began saying "Free at last".
1 week after his stunning upset victory, which placed Republicans in power for the first time in 132 years, Perdue said " The people offended by the flag change were only a small constituency of the people offended by Roy Barnes's arrogant abuse of power, they represent a small piece." The once much sought after '56 Flag supporters were locked out of meetings with Governor Perdue, and then in 2003, instead of a vote as promised between the "56 Flag" and the Barnes Rag, a whole new flag was created.
Even current Georgia US Senator Phil Gingrey had sought Flagger assistance, by promising them if elected, he would gladly fly the 56 Flag outside his office in DC. After election, he proudly hung up the Barnes flag. While avoiding the flaggers, he has sent word thru his daughter that it cost "too much money to purchase a '56 flag" and would just use the free one supplied by Uncle Sam.
It is true that Governor Perdue submitted HB380 to provide a vote between the then 3 recent flags ('56, Barnes, Perdue), but during the 2003 legislative session, the '56 Flag as an option was traded away with his blessing to get Democratic support for his controversial tobacco tax. This is the reason for the current batch of "SONNY LIED" signs, which Atlanta paper Creative Loafing has dubbed 'Georgia's Official Sign' Of course Sonny being convicted of ethics violation and Oaky Woods doesn't hurt either.
When HB380 was originally proposed, the Atlanta business community began complaning. Statements from Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank and several other business leaders said the referendum as proposed is unacceptable and divisive. "In my opinion, the citizens of the state should not be asked to vote on a flag" said Blank, co-founder of Home Depot. Business leaders had been planning for the 2010 Super Bowl and was is in the running against Miami and several other cities in the Western Hemisphere for the Free Trade Area of the Americas headquarters, but neither came to Atlanta. Southern Co. CEO Allen Franklin said "I'm worried about the flag issue having some impact" Spurgeon Richardson, president of the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau: "If the referendum goes the way it's currently proposed, we think it's going to be divisive and think it's going to hurt our chances to get business"
All were empty scare tactics.
If any state flag was bad for business, it would have to be Perdue's flag. The millions in secret taxpayer money never enticed NASCAR to build it's museum in Georgia. Businesses have left Georgia like roaches when hit with light - Brown & Williamson Tobacco of Macon, Northrop Grumman of Perry, Ford in Hapeville, and Chevrolet in Doraville. Coca-Cola profits are flat or dropping, plus they don't hold their annual convention in Georgia anymore.
The well respected Mason Dixon Polling Firm conducted a flag poll in 2004, which was presented to the Perdue Administration by Representative Tim Bearden. It shows that 79% of Georgians say the Flag issue is not settled and demand what is termed a 'Fair Flag Vote' as originally promised by Governor Sonny Perdue. Rep. Tim Bearden had submitted HB15 to allow a Fair Vote between the 1956 Bell version flag and 2003 Perdue version flag. Governor Perdue has stated the issue is settled, and the 79% of Georgians can take a hike.
Since January 2001, the 56 Flag has prospered more than any other state flag in American history. It is on hundreds of thousands of flagpoles statewide. It is on shirts, bumpers, hats and car tags. It is very near and dear to a majority of Georgians, and is still an issue undecided.
Georgian's should not have to suffer politicians who lie for political gain, and like the Flaggers, should hold them to their campaign promises.
A Flag vote is all that was asked for in January 2001, again in January 2002, and right up till today. Even Ga.State Rep.Tyrone Brooks, the man who is most credited for his efforts in the change, had requested a flag vote. The Mississippi Flag issue was allowed a public vote, and from that vote their issue was settled. Do the Citizens of Mississippi have more rights than do Georgians?
Mrs. Taylor,
I noticed on your website that your hobby was writing "Historical Fiction." Well I must say that you are a very good fictional writer.
"For those who insist on flying the Confederate flag – just fly it on your own property. Fly the Bonnie Blue secession flag bearing a single star. Fly the battle flag with Saint Andrew’s cross. Fly the 1956 segregation flag. Fly a swastika if you prefer. But do not pretend that your actions don’t hurt or anger some of your neighbors, and embarrass the rest of us."
==================================
You appear to want to associate those that honor their Confederate heritage and history with Nazis.
What is your reasoning for this?
Tom
hey whoever wrote this article, if you southern... go the graves of you're fallen confederate ancestors (if you have any) and spit on them. ok
this is the same guy....why dont we take christian symbols off everything if athiests find them offensive. if you're a northerner...PLEASE GO BACK
For many years, we in the Confederate Movement have been hearing the following," the Confederate flag is a flag of hate and racism." The opponents of this flag seem to hit a cord with the public, convincing them that we in this movement are some how racists and should be shund. I would like to counter their charges; I think you will be very surprised to learn what I have to tell you. For those of us in this movement, the Confederate flag is not a racist flag. Nor is it a flag of hate, it is the flag of our country, The Confederate States of America.
Charge # 1: " The Klan flies the Confederate Flag."
This is not entirely true. The main stream Klan does not fly the Confederate flag, only one or two Chapters fly the flag; and then they are not in the main stream. These chapters, have broken away from the regular Klan. By mainstream I mean, the one that has the most members. The flag that the Klan flies on a regular basis is the U.S. flag. The two chapters that fly the Confederate flag, are in Ohio and New York, both Yankee states. The Leader of the Klan has even sent out a memo not to fly the Confederate flag, it seems they don't want to be associated with the flag; which is just fine with us Confederates.
Charge # 2: the Nazi's also uses The Confederate Flag.
This is almost laughable, in all the Nazi rallies, I have never seen the Confederate flag used at all. The Nazi's don't use the Confederate flag, for the following reasons:
1.The modern day Nazi's, or Neo-Nazis, still follow the teachings of Adolf Hitler.
2.Hitler outlawed the Confederate Flag in 1935; he understood what the Confederate Flag meant. His Government was a totalitarian and Centralist Government, The Confederate Flag stands for States rights and a non-Centralist form Government. I was reading a book that a friend gave me, it was the story of a Wilhelm Bucher. Mr. Bucher's Great, Great Grandfather fought for the Confederacy. After the war, the elder Mr. Bucher went back to Germany. When Wilhelm Bucher flew his Confederate flag outside his Berlin House in 1936, the nazi's S.A., (or Storm Troopers) came and took it down. They informed him that it was illegal for him to fly that flag. Not to be undaunted, he had two other Confederate flags. He then flew the First National Confederate Flag.
This time, the S.S. came for him. He was sent to Bergen Belsin, (this was before it became a Concentration Camp) for a period of two years. When he was released, he went home flew his third and last Confederate Flag. The Gestapo came for him this time, they took him to Gestapo Headquarters and shot him in Jan. 1939. So if it is the Flag flown by the Nazi's some one hasn't told them of the ban Hitler put on the Confederate flag.
Charge #3: The Confederate Flag flew over Slavery.
While this is true, the same can be said of the u.S. Flag. The u.S. Flag flew over slavery a full 70 years before the Confederate States of America came into existence. The Confederate Flag never flew over the Ships that brought the slaves over here. To top it all off, the Confederate States of America freed her slaves in 1863; the Federal Union didn't do it until 1868 with the passage of the 13th amendment.
The Confederate flag was a more egalitarian flag than the Federal flag, in that it had integrated troops within its army. In the Federal army, the black troops served in their own divisions and served under white officers. These troopers saw very little combat; they mostly served in servile roles, serving mostly as laborers and personal servants to the white officers.
The Confederate Army used Blacks both as Soldiers and laborers, there were those white officers in the Confederate Army that had personal servants, but this was not the norm. The Black Soldiers in the Confederate Army were paid the same rate as the White Soldier, they were paid more If they served as laborers. Plus if the Black Confederate soldiers found any Northern weapons or equipment, they could sell them to the Confederate Army for about twice what they were worth on the open market.
Charge # 4: The Confederate Flag is an anti-Christian Flag.
This Charge again is laughable, The Confederate Flag is a Christian Flag.
You will notice the third National Confederate Flag. It is the last flag that the Confederate Congress voted into existence in 1864.
The X that you see in the upper left hand part of the Flag, is called the Cross of St. Andrews. This an off shoot of the Scottish National flag, a non-racial flag. For those who don't know who St. Andrew was, he was a Follower of our lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To the best of my knowledge, he lived about 70 years after Christ was Crucified. He was slated to die by crucifixion by the Romans, for his witness for the Lord. As most early Christians, he did not feel worthy to die on the same cross as our lord. St. Peter, for example, was crucified on an upside down cross. St. Andrew requested to be Crucified on a perverted cross as well, an X. That is how the Second and Third National, along with the Battle Canton came into existence.
Charge # 5: The Confederate Flag is Anti-Jewish.
Again, no it is not. Many Jews served under this flag not only as soldiers, but also as high officials. One of the most prominent Confederate Jews, was Judah P. Benjamin. Mr. Benjamin was not only the Secretary of State and the Secretary of War for the Confederate States of America, but also the Attorney General as well. He also enjoyed the coveted role of person advisor to C.S.A. President Jefferson Davis, a position that any Gentile would love to have. There were other prominent Jews in the Confederate States of America, too many for me to list in this paper. There is even a Jewish Prayer for the Confederacy, Read it below.
Shemang Yisroel, Ad-nay El-hainoo, Ad-noy Achod!
Oh G-d of the Universe! Although unworthy through my manifestold transgressions, I approach the seat of thy mercy, to crave thy favor, and to seek thy protection. I supplicate thy forgiveness, O most merciful Father, for the many transgressions and the oft repeated disobedience, which cause Thee to command destruction over me. Behold me now, O my Father, supplicating Thy protection! Thou who art near when all other aid faileth! O spare me, guard me from the evil that is impending!
This once happy country is inflamed by the fury of war; a menacing enemy is arrayed against the rights, liberties and freedom of this, our Confederacy; the ambition of this enemy has dissolved fraternal love, and the hand of fraternity has been broken asunder by the hands of those, who sit now in council and meditate our chastisement, with the chastisement of scorpions. Our firesides are threatened; the foe is before us, with the declared intention to desecrate our soil, to murder our people, and to deprive us of the glorious inheritance which was left to us by the immortal fathers of this once great Republic.
Here I stand now with many thousands of the sons of the sunny South, to face the foe, to drive him back, and to defend our natural rights. O Lord, G-d of Israel, be with me in the hot season of the contending strife; protect and bless me with health and courage to bear cheerfully the hardships of war.
O L-rd, Ruler of Nations, destroy the power of our enemies! "Grant not the longings of the wicked; suffer not his wicked device to succeed, lest the exalt themselves. Selah. as for the heads of those that encompass me about, let the mischief of their own lips cover them. Let burning coals be cast upon them; let them be thrown into the fire, into deep pits, that they rise not up again." (Psalm 140). Be unto the Army of this confederacy, as thou were of old, unto us, thy chosen people— Inspire them with patriotism! Give them when marching to meet, or, overtake the enemy, the wings of the eagle— in the camp be Thou their watch and ward— and in the battle, strike for them, O Almighty G-d of Israel, as thou didst strike for thy people on the plains of Canaan—guide them O L-rd of Battles, into the paths of victory, guard them from the shaft and missile of the enemy. Grant that they may ever advance to wage battle, and battle in thy name to win! Grant that not a standard be ever lowered among them! O L-rd, G-d, Father, be thou with us!
Give unto the officers of the Army and of the Navy of the Confederate States, enterprise, fortitude and undaunted courage; teach them the ways of war and the winning of victory. Guard and preserve, O L-rd, the President of the Confederate States and all officers, who have the welfare of the country truly at heart. Bless all my fellow-citizens, and guard them against sickness and famine! May they prosper and increase!
Hear me further, O L-rd, when I pray to Thee for those on earth, dearest to my heart. O bless my father, mother, brothers and sisters. (if married: my wife and children.) O bless them all with earthly and heavenly good! May they always look up to Thee, and may they find in Thee their trust and strength.
O L-rd, be with me always. Show me the way I have to go, to be prepared to meet Thee here and hereafter.
My hope, my faith, my strength are in Thee, O L-rd, my G-d, forever— in Thee is my trust. "For thy salvation do I hope, O L-rd! I hope for Thy salvation, O L-rd! O L-rd, for Thy salvation do I hope!" Amen! Amen!
Shemang Yisroel, Ad-noy El-hainoo, Ad-noy Achod!
This prayer clearly shows the Jewish Connection to the Confederacy, one that the public is not supposed to know.
Charge # 6: The Confederate Flag is Anti-Native American.
This is also a lie, spread by the likes of the N.A.A.C.P. and the other racist Yankee groups. There were Tribes that allied themselves to the Confederate States of America, they also fought for them under the Stars and Bars. These tribes were: the Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Creek, Seminole and Muskogee. They fought under the Confederate Banner, they even had a Cherokee General lead them; his name was General Stand Waitie. Further it was not under the Confederate Flag that the Native American culture was nearly annihilated, it was under the u.S Flag that happened. It was under the u.S. flag that over 3,000,000 Native Americans were massacred, from 1865 to 1911, (this includes all of the tribes, both North and South following the war of Northern aggression).
Now you might be wondering at this point, why you have been told these lies. The reason is simple, to stop you from questioning the Federal Union Empire. The Confederate States of America was the last true Constitutional Republic on this Continent, the kind envisioned by the Founding Fathers in 1781 and 1787.
To be perfectly honest it was not the South that rebelled, it was the North under the Socialist President Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln rebelled against and overthrew the Government that was given to us in 1787, the South tried to maintain that Government by leaving the Union; when the Presidential Election of 1860 was stolen by the newly formed Republican Party.
I hope I have given you the proof that you need, to make an informed decision regarding the truth about the Confederate Flag.
you spat on francis marion babb's

Anonymous March 9 at 1:51 pm, it seems you are the one who is ashamed of his own views, leaving your ugly post without putting your name. How cowardly.
I am not a person who spits. I am proud of my ancestors. I cannot know if they are proud of me. Many of them fought for the Confederacy, probably for a variety of reasons. If they were alive today, they would likely be pledging the American flag. Those who are alive, do.

I don't agree with Jeannie either, but she deserves the respect afforded ANY LADY in the South! Where are y'alls manners!?
Shame on y'all!

Subject: Ringgold Depot/ An Ope Report /hk@csaweb.org / southernheritage411.com
On Wednesday, March 13, 2008, I would adorn the uniform of the Southern soldier, and position myself outside the famous Depot Station in Ringgold, Georgia, where his flag was removed in dishonor, from a place that he gave his life defending an honorable people. I could spend an entire page reporting on the many people who would on this day stop and give me praise, love, and so many acts of kindness for making a stand in Dixieland against the injustice that was perpetrated here. However, I would rather speak of the sadness that I felt for the Black folks in Ringgold . Here they were being used as pawns to dishonor the memory of General Patrick Ronayne Cleburne, the first to suggest( in a circular letter ) the arming of slaves into military service ) and probably the most ardent spokesman and champion for the Black man that wore the rank of general in the Confederate army, and certainly my mom’s favorite Confederate General. It would not have set well with General Cleburne in the removal of the Battle flag that he and all Southerners know has become the symbol most synonymous to not only the men of the armies of the South, but of the Southern people as well. Here we are once again caught up in the reconstruction modus operandi designed to pit us as surely the traitorous beings that we will become by positioning ourselves with those who filled their coffers by climbing into the bed with the enemies of our fathers.
The real fear for those who hate our heritage and come into our southland spreading their lies amongst our people is that they well know and understand history and are terrified as well as mystified as to why there are not many acts of violence against them for what took place around here during the terror reigns of Sherman and the legacy he left behind. Squash the battle flag and all memory of it , by using the only tool at their disposal which will justify the means; the African and the lies told about his condition of servitude, and the only place on God’s earth where he could get a good night’s sleep , the Southland of America. God bless the people of Ringgold, and I thank them for the love bestowed.

Ms.Taylor's column is such a mishmash I don't know where to start. But I'll try to be concise, in an attempt at good manners.
The statement "As for historical accuracy, the city has done its homework and determined that the blue and white flag of Gen. Patrick Cleburne was the flag flown at the depot during the Civil War" is only partly true. The flag referred to is that of Gen. Hardee's Corps, and it's true that that corps and its regiments showed that battle color until late in the war. Eventually it was replaced, as were all other variant battle colors (like Gen. Polk's St. George's cross-based version of the flag, with a starry red cross on a blue flag), by the Confederate Battle Flag.
The national flag in 1863-1865 also incorporated the Battle Flag in a canton and would have been displayed everywhere, and by the Army.
Ms. Taylor's profession of shame at her neighbors and ancestors reflects the continuing polemical attack on the South by political operators led by The New York Times and businessmen nervous of public perception and the power of politically active journalists to shape such perceptions -- as witness NASCAR's flight from its original fan base, whom they insult deeply as they play suck-up to what they think is "civilized" opinion -- again, as retailed by Northern opinionmakers and Manhattan PR executives.
Ms. Taylor, you can never lick their hands hard enough to make those people like you or slow their assault on the South, because in the end it's about electoral politics and what it takes to win the White House. And for now, they've decided that using white Southerners as raggedy-man scarecrows serves that purpose.
Your cringing before them will not appease or deter them from dealing in these PC stereotypes.

I'm not entering the fray, except to say that Ms. B-T is correct when she says cowards hide behind "anonymous" posts. If you want to have credibility, own your views and statements.

Mam you are mixed up aren't ya'? You advocate home schoolin yet you know not what you say when you contradict the very freedom you practice. Previous posts go into great detail one you ever thou the causes of the WTBS and the adoption of the state flag ,etc.I won't repeat the arguments. Have you ever givn' a wee bit o' thought to "playin in to the enemy of freedom's hands?
The battle flag was never once mentioned to the black citizens who marched with Dr. King. He never sought to demonize the flag as hate groups including the Klan NAACCCp have today. Also your desire to home school must include teaching truth to your kids. The current fight in California to ban home schooling is all about freedom that is being taken away.
I hope you will be open minded enough to recant what you have said when you meet people such as HK Edgerton when he returns to Ringold. Maybe just maybe you will join our fight to preserve the honour of this flag and to expose the cultural marxists for what they are... jacobins!

Dear Mrs Babb
In reference to the rather informative and sanely written letter I sent you, and requested a reply.... I still await.
I repudiate the attacks witnessed here. If dialogue is to be dicussed, let the discourse be free of cuss and discord. Just because someone can yell louder or use bigger words that others don't make them a winner.
I am honestly interested in hearing your input on the fact that many other races, as shown via links provided by myself, not of caucasion decent fought under the Confederate standard.
I also am interested in your take on the facts I provided on the 1956-2001 Ga Flag - from it's purely benign creation to the testimony given in court to the statements of former Ga Governors and 1 Nobel prize winning US President.
Thanks again and God Bless
Billy Bearden
Hi, Mr. Bearden. I disagree that there was anything benign about the introduction of the 56 flag. I am being kind enough to publish your piece on my blog. That's all ya get. ;-)
Of course there were Confederate soldiers of various skin tone and ethnic background. I am not sure how that makes racism any less racist.
In Ringgold, actual people who live here asked that the flag be taken down. The anger, resistance and protest is not coming from Ringgold. It's coming from people who do not live in this city, this county, or in many cases even in this state.
If SCV and other Confederate romanticists are in favor of local control as opposed to Big Government, then why use the courts to try to force locals in Ringgold to accept something we don't want? Time to practice what you preach.
Dear Mrs Babb,
Thanks for the speedy and courteous reply (this time around ;P ) Also 'preciate the generosity of allowing the history of the 56 flag to remain uncensored.
Since the article of March 5th, you have written another 2 (3?) pieces, but as you can tell, some of us 'Romanticits' love to keep our 'Avenues to history' open, and as such is why I am still discussing this article with you.
My link to CSA Captain Gonzales buried in West Point Ga at Ft Tyler and his decendant Tony Gonzales in my SCV camp was not to say racism is any less racist, it was to refute the 2nd half of your 7th paragraph of March 5th where you wrote
"...Can white Georgians claim the right to keep waving that (Confederate) emblem in the face of other Georgians who experienced attacks and demonstrations, feared lynching, and faced every kind of discrimination?"
Not every 'white' person was a kluxer, not every kluxer used a Confederate symbol, and not every black suffered your aforementioned tribulations, and even some blacks - from Nat Turner to bloods and crips to Rev J Wright are just as evil. No group has a monopoly on Sainthood.
I reckon that what I would like to say, and hopefully have you agree, is that there is a sizable (more than not) population of folks (of all races and cultures) that do not use, fly, or espouse Confederate symbols for hate, to burn crosses, to hang people from trees, or to deny someone a spot in line at the county fair. These people honor their ancestors in Gray, place flags on their graves, march in parades, put on living histories, do reenactments, and other such good. And yes, decendants like Gonzales and of Bill Yopp (the black Confederate Soldier mentioned in this year's Georgia Confederate Heritage and History Month Proclamation signed by Sonny Purdue) as well as your "typical white person" do fly the Confederate flag with reverence and affection.
Also, to throw a gear into the monkey wrenches, my GGGRandfather, Aaron M Bearden, was a Private in the Georgia 2nd State Line (Gov Joe Brown's) Confederate Infantry, and was assigned to protect the Western and Atlantic Railroad - in response to Andrew's Raid. His unit helped slow down Sherman's rapists, thugs, looters, and bummers. Seems at one time or another he may have set foot in Ringgold during this time, but not either under a Hardee Pattern or 3x5 Rectangle pattern of a Confederate Battle Flag.
Thank you for hearing me out and sharing conversation. Hopefully we can meet at the event on April 26th and discuss more further.
God Bless
Billy Bearden
I will keep my comment brief. The Confederates loss, the Union prevailed- hence the name UNITED States of America. If we as countrymen quarrel amongst ourselves, we make it all to easy for our enemies to conqueor "a house divived..."
I am an American soldier, and I PROUDLY fight for the United States of America!
Thanks for your service to our country, in the US Military.
The country that declares that Confederates are US Veterans.
The country that trained you at a Confederate named base like Fort Bragg or Fort Hood, and educated you at someplace like Fort Lee, Fort AP Hill, Fort Gordon, or Fort Stewart.
The country that protected us with the USS Robert E Lee and USS Stonewall Jackson (Nuke Subs)
The country that is protected by the Stonewall Brigade, among others.
The country that was protected by the Confederate Flag bearing 31st US Infantry "Dixie Division"
The country whose US Marines captured Shuri Castle during the Battle of Okinawa and ran up a Confederate Flag for victory.
The country where 8 of the current state flags bear some Confederate symbol.
And the country where the most sacred of Military Cemeteries is at the former home of General Robert E Lee in Arlington
